Jewish Community and Culture in Straubing

There is a long Jewish history in Straubing to look back on: The very first record of Jews living in Straubing goes back to 1307. About 600 years later, the synagogue was built.
The more than 100 years old neoromantic building is the only synagogue in Lower Bavaria. In the Pogrom Night in November 1938, the synagogue was vandalized, but not destroyed.
In the late 80s, the synagogue was completely renovated and has since shined in new splendor.

The historic synagogue has offered a meeting place for the Jewish community in Straubing. The community has grown considerably since the 1990s with more and more migrants arriving from the former Soviet Union. Today the Jewish community in the Lower Bavarian city counts 1,000 members.

The Experience
A visit of the synagogue affords an opportunity to get acquainted with Jewish rites and customs as well as the Jewish history in Straubing. Meet the chairwoman of the Jewish community and hear the moving story of a German/Jewish family founded in postwar Germany. Israel Offman, her father, was the youngest child of a wealthy Polish family and concentration camp survivor, who settled in postwar Straubing, married a German catholic woman who converted to Judaism. He was essential for rebuilding a thriving Jewish Community. His daughter carries on promoting a peaceful and inclusive society with charm and pragmatic wit.
